Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality
Macaws are an excellent companion bird. They are friendly and intelligent. They are best with well-rounded families. They can get bored easily and find different ways to entertain themselves when their owners do not interact with them enough. Macaws that aren't socialized may become aggressive and even bite. It is important that boundaries are clearly defined to ensure that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are energetic birds who love to play, climb and interact. They need at least 2 to 3 hours a day in their cages to get physical exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy playing games, learning tricks, and listening to music. They enjoy visiting parks and playgrounds as well as hiking, local eateries and bars. These birds can be very loud, despite their affection for their mate. They can also be a nuisance for those who live nearby. They are capable of high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which can be disruptive in condos and apartments or near young children who may be frightened by their roar.
Another intriguing characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic meaning males and females are difficult to differentiate. For this reason, DNA testing is the only way to determine sex. Once sex is established pairing the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases and tricks. This can be a long process and the pet's owner must be patient and understand that this is a tough task. Lolita's care
For decades, activists have been pleading for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the returning of orca Keiko into the wild, activists believed that Lolita would have a similar fate. Sadly, she did not get the chance to return to the ocean.
Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, overexerting her by putting her through head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. Additionally, they place her in a tiny tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her an ancestor in a plan to eventually transport her to open water. The plan would have included a sanctuary located on the west coast of Washington where she could live for the remainder of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami house and was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.

In the wild, killer whales are social animals that connect with their families until they die. Lolita's Diet

In captivity, a well-fed macaw is likely to live up to 60 years. In addition, this majestic bird needs plenty of room to fly and exercise.

Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita is being critiqued for the quality of food that they feed killer whales. The 57-year-old orca was rescued from Puget Sound in 1970, and even though the species is endangered in the wild, she lives in an aquarium that some consider too small for her.
Lolita's Health
Lolita is gorgeous, but her health continues to decline. Her health has been a cause of concern for animal welfare organizations who want to see her released back into the wild. Lolita is a resident of the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and performed as an attraction for tourists for a long time. She has battled chronic illnesses and an infection that has left in a fragile state.
The Miami Seaquarium is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not shared information on Lolita's current condition. Friends of Toki, a non-profit organization, has published monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. These show that she is aging rapidly and her health is declining.
It is unclear what specific health issues are plaguing the orca, since her captor isn't required to share the information. However, a database of necropsies from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a major factor in the deaths of captive orcas.
Despite the continuing health concerns of Lolita, many people are hopeful that she may be closer than ever before to an unspoiled life. The new owner of Seaquarium has pledged to move the whale from her tank into her native waters in the Pacific.
The move comes after years of public pressure as well as from PETA and PETA, which demanded that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea in which she can swim in the ocean, and possibly even meet the orca believed to be her mother. Unfortunately these plans came late for the beloved whale who died on Friday from what was believed to be a renal problem.
